Mr. Altomare is a composer and pianist who has written scores for numerous theatre pieces and films. He has worked mostly in the experimental theatre and independent film world.   He is mostly known for his "open piano" techniques, and his unique style of accompanying actors closely onstage, employing techniques he developed from the relationship of musicians to actors in the kabuki theatre,  free jazz, and the interplay of a wide variety of styles of music, from classical to jazz and world music.

His teaching technique employs a balance of traditional music theory and  notation literacy with encouraging his students to discover their own style of piano improvisation.
